What I chose to discuss for my music culture is Dominican Republic music. To start off, the music is mostly influenced by no other than Western European with a mix of Sub-Saharan African Music. Merengue and bachata are the top 2 most popular genres in the Dominican Republic. There are a few instruments that make the Dominican Republic distinctive. The guira scraper comes from the Taino culture and is part of the percussion family. Second, is the Tambora drum from Africa which is used in a lot of parties. Lastly, the accordion is from Spain. All these instruments together can up the diverse culture of music in the Dominican Republic.
I was to focus on Merengue (Dominican dance music), which is a mixture of African and French Minuet from the late 1700s. Merengue is the identity of the Dominican Republic because of how it is implemented into society (education, social gatherings, celebrations, and even political campaigning). Merengue festivals are held in Santo Domingo and the dance involves dancing in pairs usually a male and female. Next, the two counterparts dance in a flirtatious manner. The importance of this dance helps people from each social class coexist and thus respect follows.
