Music & Family

For this assignment, I chose to interview my uncle Travis. My uncle is 50 years old and has different musical tastes because of his age and generation.

For this first section of the interview, I asked him what music he listened to when he was younger.

Me: what were some artists you listened to growing up?

Travis: I supposed Michael Jackson, Kool & the Gang, Run DMC, and LL Cool J.

Me: Why do you think these were the type of music you listened to when you were younger?

Travis: Most of my friends listen to the same music but I like working on cars especially when I was younger so those were the songs I played while working on cars.

Me: What other ways you would listen to music besides working on cars?

Travis: I would hear the music in the streets sometimes on Saturday afternoons or on TV. I really enjoy listening to songs with my wife because it makes the song more special. She and I have similar tastes in music.

Below I will insert a song by Michael Jackson called "Billie Jean" he says he danced to with his friends.

In this next section, I asked my uncle to explain some music that he listened to after 30 years old.

Me: Uncle Travis what was some music that you listened to after 30 years old?

Travis: The Temptations probably.

Me: Why did you start to listen to the Temptations?

Travis: His response was lengthy so I will paraphrase it.

  1. The Temptations had catchy melodies and strong vocals. Their songs, such as "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," played at my wedding. The soulful vocals brought emotions to flow when my uncle died. because he loved listening to them too. When watching their performances on TV it was dynamic and the dance moves were so appealing. Their music was great but they would talk about a lot of world issues that made the music more relatable.

Below I will insert a video from The Temptations called "My Girl".

Lastly, this section is the music he listens to currently.

Me: What music that you still listen to or just like in general?
Travis: I listen to Boyz II Men, New Edition, and TLC. There are probably more I'm getting old now I can't remember most of their names. I still listen to the music on the throwback radio today and I mean of course I listen to the Gospel.
